| Editorial Reviews:
Product Description The American Audio SDJ-2 is making the days of DJing with big turntables, vinyl, and CDs "old school". This 2-channel, rackmountable mixer doesn't need a laptop or software to get you on your way to mixing. Although it does have a USB input on front for optional external media sources, the SDJ-2 has two SD slots that accept both SD and SDHC cards from which you can create your musical medley. Independent jog wheels and bright LCD displays for each side make it easy to search and select the songs you want. Other features on the American Audio SDJ-2 include High & Low adjustments, Mic Volume, and Master Volume control, Auto BPM, seamless loop, Tempo lock, and full playback control similar to most Pro CD players. It also has a fader "Q" start, a dual mode crossfader, pitch control (+/-4%, +/-8% or +/-16%), pitch bend, balanced 1/4" TRS and RCA mixed output, as well as independent RCA outputs for each player (send signal to preamp mixer). As mentioned above, the American Audio player and mixer also has a USB input so you can use an optional full functioning MP3 player or flash drives.

| Customer Reviews: Almost a perfect product... such a shame it falls short. July 2, 2010 smart shopper 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Pros:
The device "boots" in a couple of a seconds and is ready to play at the end of third. Pitch sliders have adjustable percentage for detail beat matching. Pitch(tempo) lock for keeping the pitch the same while changing the tempo works beautifully. Jog wheels are speed sensitive and can be used to "brake" the song to a full stop at the speed you desire. Loop, cue and stutter start functions are seemless and perfect - allows you to store up to 3 cue points or loops - allows you to save your loops to recall later. LED back lit buttons that change color according to a set function - such as, if you store a cue point, the cue button lights up red; if you store a loop, the cue button lights up orange. Full digital mixer. Button to select to use internal mixer or use the device as two separate decks with an external mixer. The list goes on....... but,
Cons:
The AUTO BPM and TAP BPM counter are VERY inaccurate and do not work as advertised. Even with songs that have distinct bass lines, the AUTO BPM counter jumps all over the place, varying up to +- 10 beats per minute. The AUTO BPM counter never get the tempo right. Now you would think that this is OK, since it allows you to TAP the BPM in. Unfortunately, I don't know what American Audio did to get this wrong, but even in TAP BPM mode, it doesn't allow you to take full control of the function. When you start tapping the beat, it display a BPM value after maybe 5 taps, that is usually way off the actual tempo. Then you would continue tapping, nothing would change. Just to see if it changes, I would tap slower or faster than the song itself, there would be no change. I wait 5-10 seconds and start tapping again along with the song, the BPM counter now starts showing a totally different value. And it gets stuck at that value again. What's worse, when the same song is playing in both of the decks at the same speed (0.0%), the two BPM counters, automatic or tapped, always show non-matching values, usually off by 0.7 - 1.5 BPM.
Now, this device is great for someone whose ears are perfect and VERY FAST to do beat matching by ear. However, with the BPM counter function not working correctly, the device takes the fun away from bedroom DJing. Instead of mixing songs and coming up with new tunes, you end up spending more than half the time trying to get the songs to beat match perfectly. And I have good ears; I do get songs beat matched but I end up spending too much time and attention getting beats right and keeping sync right, instead of enjoying the mix. If you have tried other devices with TAP BPM functions, you'll know that the counter should only "listen" to your taps and calculate the BPM almost perfectly after 3 taps.
Other cons include:
Constant hissing noise in the headphone section. Not too important with you use the headphones for monitoring and preparing the next song you want to play; however, if you would like to enjoy a song through the headphones only, it gets annoying and is not acceptable.
The mixer being full digital is also a con. The EQ section produces audible thumping noise when the knobs are rotated fast to "kill" the bass line or treble. This is something to do with the response of the digital unit not being fast enough, and the thumping noise is due to the processor trying to turn up the bass or treble volume as fast as you are demanding. EQ also lacks mids control.
Overall, as great a product as it almost is, it falls short for the fun-factor.
